Go to Asylum for the atmosphere, stay for the weekend brunch
We all know that Asylum is a great, low-key place to drink with friends or play pool, but on weekends Asylum also serves one of the few vegan brunch menus in DC. The cafe on weekends is full of hipsters, post-punks, alternative families, and vegans of all sorts. Service is spotty for sure, but the vegan french toast and chili cheese tofu scrambles are nearly worth the wait. Get there early to secure a table and to people watch. Skip the coffee, but if you have the space order home fries and soysage with whatever else you are having. Nonsmokers should sit upstairs in the front of the cafe--its not 100% smoke-free, but its far better than sitting at the bar. - EssDub , posted 04/20/05
